Terms of use

1. Who we are

VeraLens is made by VeraLens Ltd. These terms apply when you use the VeraLens app for iPhone and Apple Watch and the website at veralens.app. By using VeraLens you agree to them. Apple's standard licence terms for App Store apps also apply.

2. What VeraLens is for

VeraLens shows ingredient and nutrition facts about products, with a score and the sources behind it. It is not medical advice. If you have an allergy or a health condition, always check the pack and follow the advice of your doctor or dietitian.

Allergen, halal, kosher, vegan and pregnancy lines describe what the product data says. When the data can't confirm something, the app says so instead of guessing. Product data can be wrong or out of date, and recipes change.

3. Scores and sources

Scores are calculated from public data, including Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts under the Open Database Licence, and from rules published by regulators. Data can be out of date or incomplete. We show the export date of mirrored data and mark missing values; we never count missing data as zero. Cosmetic scores are in beta. No brand can pay to change a score or to appear in results, and VeraLens shows no ads.

Data sources and licences

• Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts: product data under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0; product images under Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0. The export date is shown with every product.
• UK Food Standards Agency: front-of-pack nutrient thresholds and food alerts. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
• US Food and Drug Administration and USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service: recall notices, works of the US government.
• RappelConso (French government recall service, rappel.conso.gouv.fr): recall notices under the Licence Ouverte / Open Licence v2.0. Source: RappelConso; the notices are fetched every day and the publication date of each notice is shown in the app.
• European Commission CosIng: cosmetic ingredient annexes of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. © European Union, reused under Commission Decision 2011/833/EU. EU food rules are cited from EUR-Lex.
• IARC Monographs (International Agency for Research on Cancer): classifications, cited with the monograph volume.
• California Proposition 65 list (OEHHA): listed chemicals, cited with the listing type.
• NOVA classification (Monteiro et al.): processing groups as computed by Open Food Facts.

Product photos come from Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts contributors under Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0; you may reuse them under that licence with credit to the contributors. Photos may show trademarks of their owners. VeraLens is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any brand shown.

4. VeraLens Pro

VeraLens Pro is an auto-renewing subscription sold through the App Store. Yearly costs $39.99 per year after a 7-day free trial; Weekly costs $3.99 per week. If you close the subscription screen, we may offer Yearly at $29.99 for the first year, then $39.99 per year. There is no monthly plan. Prices are in US dollars; the App Store shows the price in your currency, including any tax.

• Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase or, with the free trial, when the trial ends.
• Your subscription renews at the same price until you cancel in Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions, at least 24 hours before the renewal date. The renewal is charged within the 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• If you cancel during the free trial, you pay nothing. Deleting the app doesn't cancel a subscription.
• Refunds are handled by Apple under its rules.

VeraLens Pro adds alternatives with a higher score, recall alerts for products in your history, offline scanning and unlimited history. Scores, sources and allergen alerts stay free for everyone.

5. Your submissions

When you send photos or corrections, you agree that accepted changes are published under the Open Database Licence, without your name. Please send only photos of products, not of people or personal documents.

6. Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time in the app: Settings → Delete account. Deleting your account doesn't cancel VeraLens Pro, which is managed by Apple. We may suspend an account that abuses the service, for example by sending automated requests, after telling you why when we can.

7. Liability and changes

We work to keep VeraLens accurate and available, but we can't promise that data is complete or that the service is never interrupted. Nothing in these terms limits your rights as a consumer under the law of the country where you live. Further limits of liability and the governing law will be set during legal review.

We will publish any change to these terms here with a new date and tell you in the app before a change that affects you applies.
